FAQs

  • Why should I hire a pet death doula?

A pet death doula supports the emotional, spiritual and ceremonial needs that arise when a dog is dying, a cat is sick, or a beloved animal companion has just passed. While veterinarians care for the medical side, Pet Doula LA helps you navigate the fear, grief, heartbreak and the myriad of choices that will come up with compassion and expert guidance. We hold space, create meaningful rituals and help you honor your pet’s life in a way that brings comfort and clarity to everyone in the household.

  • Doesn’t my vet already do what you do?

Your veterinarian provides the medical care—pain management, physical procedures and euthanasia. Pet Doula LA supports everything surrounding that care: emotional guidance, aftercare planning, ceremony creation, grief support and making sure the goodbye feels personal, sacred and supported. We complement your vet, we do not replace them.

  • How do I know if my dog or cat is dying or just sick?

It can be hard to tell the difference and its best if you do not guess. Please contact your veterinarian if you are unsure. Dogs and cats nearing the end of life often show a cluster of changes: refusing food, extreme fatigue, difficulty standing, labored breathing, confusion, or withdrawal. A vet exam is the only way to know for sure, but a sudden or significant decline across several areas usually indicates the body is shutting down rather than fighting a temporary illness.

  • What are the signs that my animal is at the end of life?

Common signs include: not eating or drinking; restlessness or inability to get comfortable; rapid or strained breathing, loss of bladder/bowel control; weakness, collapse, or disorientation; no longer engaging with you or their favorite things. These signs aren’t subtle — they usually appear in combination and worsen quickly.

  • How do I know if my animal is suffering?

A pet is considered to be suffering when pain or distress outweighs moments of comfort. Indicators include: panting even at rest; crying, pacing, or trembling; refusing food for more than 24–48 hours; not wanting to move because it hurts; not able to sleep comfortably any longer.

  • Do I need to use your veterinarian?

No. Pet Doula LA will gladly collaborate with your existing veterinary team—offering support that complements, rather than replaces, their medical care.

Pet Doula LA also partners with a small circle of trusted veterinarians—compassionate, deeply skilled doctors who understand the spiritual and emotional layers of end-of-life care. They approach this work gently, slowly and with reverence, ensuring your pet is treated like family every step of the way.

  • What does a peaceful animal death look like?

A peaceful passing usually includes: relaxed breathing; a sense of calm or stillness; softening of the body after they slip away; no signs of panic or distress; and, all of their favorite people relaxed and gathered and gently loving them to death.

Because love asks us to stay until the very last moment.

  • My pet just died — what do I do first?

First, confirm that your pet has truly passed (no breathing, no heartbeat, no response). You might want to check in with your veterinarian. If they have passed naturally and on their own, gently place them on a towel or blanket and keep the room cool to slow natural changes. When you’re ready, contact Pet Doula LA if you would like us to pick up your pet and guide you through aftercare arrangements. Please take a deep breath. There is no need to panic. We are here to support you every step of the way.

  • What happens to my pet’s body after they die?

Aftercare options include: Private Cremation (you get the ashes back); Communal Cremation (ashes are not returned); Home Burial (local laws apply); Cemetery Burial (pet cemeteries offer plots, markers) or Sea Burial (ashes or body may go out to sea). When you’re ready, contact Pet Doula LA if you would like us to pick up your pet and guide you through aftercare arrangements. We are here to support you every step of the way.

  • I’m not religious. Will your services fit me?

Yes. All services at Pet Doula LA are non-denominational and fully customizable. Whether you want no religion at all, a nature-based ceremony, something spiritual, or something purely reflective, everything is shaped around your values. There’s no spiritual pressure — just practical and emotional support tailored to what y o u need.

  • Where are you located?

We’re honored to support families throughout Los Angeles. We travel to neighborhoods including Beverly Hills, Bel Air, Holmby Hills, Brentwood, Pacific Palisades, West Hollywood, Hollywood Hills, Santa Monica, Westwood, Century City, Marina del Rey, Venice, and Hancock Park — as well as Eastside and nearby areas such as Pasadena, Glendale, Burbank, Silver Lake, Los Feliz, Echo Park, and the San Fernando Valley.

If you’re outside the Los Angeles area, we offer virtual consultations to provide guidance and emotional support — whether you’re preparing for euthanasia, caring for a dying pet at home, or seeking comfort after loss.

  • How do I know if it’s too early or if I’ve waited too long?

Almost everyone wonders if they waited too long or might be acting too soon — it’s one of the most universal parts of loving an animal through the end of life. But please know this: doubt comes from deep love. You are making decisions the best way you can, with care, with devotion and with your pet’s comfort at the center.

Our animals are remarkably clear when they’re tired, when they’re done fighting, and when peace is kinder than pushing forward. If you’re unsure whether it’s time, you don’t have to figure it out by yourself.

Reach out to Pet Doula LA for guidance, support, and a compassionate conversation about what you’re seeing and feeling. We can help you understand your pet’s signs, assess quality-of-life and explore whether euthanasia or comfort care is the gentlest next step.
